MST PRODUCT UPDATE

2D CAD to 3D model generation

MST adds a module that generates 3D models from 2D CAD drawings, with linked drawing views and reconstructed geometry for engineering review.

MST has developed a new module that generates 3D models from 2D CAD drawings. It brings the source drawing views and reconstructed geometry into one workspace, helping engineers move from existing drawings to a model they can inspect against the original.

The new module extends MST’s engineering product capabilities. Teams can explore drawing-based reconstruction alongside the existing P&ID-driven equipment assembly workflow, choosing the starting point that matches their engineering task.

From three drawing views to a 3D model

The example shows a mechanical equipment drawing with front, top and right-side views. The 3D pane displays the reconstructed equipment, while the original views remain visible for comparison. Engineers can examine how a feature seen in one projection relates to the other views and to the model.

Keep the drawing and model available for review

The workspace includes controls for drawing edges, intersection points, closed contours, recognition and modeling. It also presents model views and a reconstruction review area. Keeping this information together gives the engineer a way to inspect the generated shape in the context of the source drawing.

In the example shown, component proposals and items awaiting checking remain visible. The model is a starting point for engineering review: dimensions, omitted details and the intended use of the result need to be checked against the drawing and the team’s requirements.

A new use for existing CAD drawings

Engineering teams often have useful design information in existing 2D drawings. Reconstructing a model can support the next discussion about shape, component arrangement or design reuse. A useful evaluation starts with a representative drawing and a clear definition of the model the team needs.

For this module, the starting point is the geometry described in the CAD drawing. In MST’s P&ID-to-3D assembly workflow, the starting point is process connectivity and the customer’s approved component models. Both workflows keep the relationship between engineering inputs and the resulting model available for review.

Discuss your drawing-to-model task

Tell us what equipment your drawings describe, which drawing formats you use and what you want to do with the resulting 3D model. The team can discuss a demonstration and agree on the supported inputs, required output and acceptance checks for your task.

Explore the 2D CAD to 3D product module, or request a demonstration. Start with a non-confidential description; the inquiry form does not require a drawing upload.
