P&ID, BOM and PDM Handoff to SolidWorks

Stop re-entering the same equipment tags, part choices and connections when you move from the P&ID and BOM into SolidWorks. Start with one module and carry the approved information through to the native assembly.

DIRECT ANSWER

MST AI Engineer connects reviewed P&ID requirements and BOM items to approved native models, plans their physical arrangement and checks the assembly created in SolidWorks. The current implemented scope—controlled modular semiconductor process-equipment assemblies—requires agreed inputs, model revisions and engineering rules.

LESS MANUAL TRANSFER BETWEEN TOOLS

Our P&ID and BOM are separate from the 3D model. Where do we start?

Start by connecting each equipment tag to a part number, revision, native model and required ports. A BOM lists the components; the connection information tells the assembly workflow how they must work together.

Can SOLIDWORKS already use P&ID data?

SOLIDWORKS Routing supports a specially formatted P&ID XML file as a guide for building routing assemblies. Check the required format and component mapping before choosing that route. A PDF drawing still needs its symbols, tags and connections interpreted and reviewed. SOLIDWORKS P&ID import workflow.

What information does MST need for one module?

Bring the reviewed P&ID, BOM or tag list, the approved native component models and their interfaces, and the available space. Agree which connections and rules the evaluation must satisfy. Missing or ambiguous input needs a decision from your engineer before the affected work can proceed.

What happens when the P&ID or a part revision changes?

Identify the changed tags, connections and model revisions, then agree which assembly work and checks must run again. Inspect the regenerated result against the updated inputs. Ask for a demonstration of your change case before assuming incremental updates or automatic synchronization with every PDM system.

An engineer describes the split between Plant 3D P&IDs/BOMs and a SOLIDWORKS model in this public Plant Design discussion. It illustrates the handoff problem; it is not an MST customer case.

01 / BUYER FIT

The handoff loses identity when each system carries only part of the truth.

GOOD FITCurrent fit: a controlled modular semiconductor process-equipment workflow with reviewable P&ID evidence, BOM context, authorized PDM identity and revision, approved native geometry, declared rules and a SolidWorks acceptance target.
NOT A FITA request to invent missing source facts, infer undocumented authority, accept arbitrary PDFs as production-ready CAD instructions or bypass engineering approval. Other equipment domains require separate qualification and configuration before capability is claimed.

02 / HANDOFF CONTRACT

Carry identity, revision, connection intent and provenance into execution.

Keep the selected part revisions and required connections visible from the source drawing through to the saved assembly, so your engineer can check what was carried across.

P&ID intentEquipment, Tags, direction, conditions and connections remain tied to source regions.
BOM + PDM authorityConfigured items resolve to approved identities, revisions, lifecycle states and native assets.
Physical planComponents, interfaces, poses, mates and routes become an explicit execution contract.
Native read-backThe reopened SolidWorks assembly is checked against the same source-bound obligations.

Trace the engineering handoff Follow the roles of process intent, part identity and qualified interfaces from inputs to native CAD.
Prepare the input and data handoff Assign owners for approved files, model revisions, processing boundaries and evaluation deliverables.
Agree the evidence to inspect Define the identity, connection and native-output evidence needed to judge your handoff.

Qualification question

Where does your engineering handoff break today?

Describe one non-confidential point where identity, revision, connection intent or acceptance evidence must be re-entered or manually reconciled.
